The Biden administration's $5 billion initiative to establish a nationwide network of electric vehicle (EV) chargers has been suspended by the Trump-led Department of Transportation (DoT). The Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) has directed states to pause all approvals and spending commitments for the National Electric Vehicle Infrastructure (NEVI) program while it reassesses policies. The FHWA plans to introduce updated guidance for the NEVI Formula Program by spring to reflect current priorities, but until then, no new funding will be issued, leaving states in a holding pattern regarding their EV infrastructure plans.
The new leadership of the Department of Transportation has decided to review the policies underlying the implementation of the NEVI Formula Program.
As a result of the rescission of the NEVI Formula Program Guidance, FHWA is also immediately suspending the approval of all State Electric Vehicle Infrastructure Deployment plans for all fiscal years.
