UK considers social media ban for under-16s as Minister orders new research

Technology Secretary Peter Kyle has commissioned new research into social media and smartphone use on children, indicating possible UK restrictions on under-16s similar to Australia.

Australia is advancing plans to ban social media for under-16s, with Prime Minister Albanese declaring, 'Social media is doing harm to our kids and I'm calling time on it.'

Kyle noted he is 'looking very closely' at Australia’s initiative and is 'open-minded' about imposing a similar social media ban in the UK.

Alongside this research, the Safer Phones Bill by Labour MP MacAlister proposes a ban on under-16s accessing social media, highlighting growing concerns over child mental health.
