This year, the floods overwhelmed the dams and dikes erected around Dongting Hu, leading to the evacuation of at least 7,000 people as rescue efforts intensified.
Ren Benxin described his experience, saying: 'I rescued the animals first, then the supplies. It was the first time in 10 years that I’d experienced something like this.'
By August, China had recorded 25 large floods, the highest number since 1998. President Xi Jinping called for all-out rescue and relief work.
Ren reflected on the extreme weather variations, noting: 'Two years ago, we had a severe drought, and this year it’s been floods. We need to be prepared for anything.’
