Why 'Carol' Day is S.F.'s hottest new holiday tradition
Briefly

"I don't want to come out and be the first person to say that Christmas films and a lot of Christmas traditions are very cisgender-heterosexual focused. We can enjoy a cheesy Hallmark film as much as the next person," said Frameline Executive Director Allegra Madsen, "but it also feels good to imagine what it looks like for us to be centered as queer people at the holidays, and to build on those traditions."
"Carol," based on the 1952 novel "The Price of Salt" by Patricia Highsmith, is the story of Carol Aird (Blanchett), a glamorous New Jersey housewife divorcing her wealthy husband. She meets young aspiring photographer Therese Belivet (Rooney Mara) while buying a doll for her daughter at the department store where Therese works."
I hope you have your Cate Blanchett ornaments hung and reservations for your glove lunches! I'm proud that San Francisco is leading the way promoting "Carol" as a new LGBTQ tradition and queer cinema classic.
The 2015 movie is a gorgeous period drama and arguably the most lauded lesbian-centered film of the past decade. Its 1950s tarnished-tinsel vibe also makes "Carol" the perfect alternative holiday viewing.
