The price of eggs soared nearly 65% from January to December 2024 largely due to an outbreak of highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI), which led to the culling of over 23 million birds in December alone. This national egg shortage is forcing grocery stores to limit purchases and restaurants, like Waffle House, to add surcharges. Moreover, New York has announced the closure of live bird markets to control the virus spread. Supply chain issues originating from previous pandemics and ongoing inflation further complicate the situation, although the USDA has noted a slight improvement in supply recently.
The price of eggs is expected to skyrocket by another 20% this year, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture.
Prices rose from $2.52 per-dozen for large, grade A eggs in January 2024 to $4.15 by that December, a nearly 65% change.
Some 23.2 million birds had to be killed in December 2024 alone after contracting the virus, according to USDA, triggering a national egg shortage.
While we hope these price fluctuations will be short-lived we cannot predict how long this shortage will last, Waffle House said.
