Women urged to get symptoms checked as ultra-rare cancer dismissed as menopause

Jo Shaw Pyke faced an 18-month misdiagnosis of her genital symptoms, revealing a rare vulvar mucosal melanoma after doctors dismissed her concerns as menopause-related.

Despite being a cancer counsellor for 13 years, Jo had never encountered mucosal melanoma, illustrating the rarity and obscurity of this cancer type.

With treatment options limited, Jo's friends have started a GoFundMe to help her access potentially life-saving TIL therapy not available in the UK.

Mucosal melanoma affects only 1% of melanoma cases, developing in mucous membranes, highlighting the rarity and severity of Jo's diagnosis.
