The article highlights frustration over a significant 30% price increase for Microsoft 365 Family subscriptions, which was communicated via email shortly before renewal. Despite Microsoft's impressive financial growth, the hike appears linked to their push for users to adopt Copilot AI functionalities. The author felt trapped in the Microsoft ecosystem, unable to easily switch to alternative services due to time constraints, leading to resentment and a commitment to seek alternatives in the future. A follow-up email later provided additional price details, yet the user still felt stuck with the subscription.
A few weeks before my long standing Microsoft 365 Family subscription was due for renewal I received an email stating that it will automatically-renew, one thing it failed to mention was the new price was 30% more than last year.
Microsoft have been doing pretty, pretty well, so why the bump? Well, it looks like they want subscribers to adopt their embedded Copilot AI and are aggressively pushing it with all their new and renewing subscriptions.
I didn’t have the bandwidth at this point in time to cleanly migrate my family and data from the 365 platform so I resigned myself to having to pay the higher fee, albeit with a lot of resentment.
Notice how this email has more details about the price change. I dismissed this email as I had already come to the conclusion that I was somewhat stuck with Microsoft 365 for the foreseeable future.
