Spotify's free tier just got a major upgrade - here's what's new
"Until now, Spotify has been mostly a "shuffle" experience. You can add certain songs to a playlist or choose to listen to a pre-built playlist, but when you access that playlist, the songs appear at random. You have the ability to skip certain songs, but you only have a limited number of skips. Also: Spotify's long-awaited lossless music is finally here - how to enable it today Starting Monday, you can listen to any individual song whenever you want."
"You have three ways to do this: Pick & Play: Want to hear that song that's been stuck in your head? Tap play on a track in the Spotify app, and you can pick and play any song at any time. Search & Play: Type in your favorite track or artist and start listening instantly. Share & Play: This is one you'll appreciate if you like using the app's social features. If a friend or an artist you follow shares a song on social media, you can tap that track and immediately hear it."
"Less than a week after debuting long-awaited lossless audio and a few weeks after adding direct message capability, Spotify is rolling out some more good news. This time, it's for free users. In an announcement Monday , the company detailed a major change on the way for free users - the ability to listen to any song at any time."
Spotify is upgrading its free tier to permit on-demand playback of individual tracks. Free users can Pick & Play by tapping a track, Search & Play by searching for a song or artist, or Share & Play by tapping songs shared on social media. The change removes the enforced shuffle-only listening model and alleviates previous skip limitations. Personalized playlists and end-of-year Wrapped playlists will also allow selection of individual songs. The rollout begins today for free users and follows recent additions such as lossless audio and direct messaging features.
