Colman Domingo described coming out to his older brother Derek in the 1990s. Derek reacted with surprise, then said he did not care and that he loved Domingo anyway, hugging him and asking whether he had told anyone else. Domingo later told his sister, who was only upset that she was not told first. When Domingo told his mother, she said she would keep it private but quickly called his stepfather. The stepfather responded with acceptance, saying Domingo was a good boy and that nothing would stop his love. Domingo also recalled being a shy, sensitive child who was not popular or athletic. He later married Raul Domingo in 2014, meeting through Craigslist’s Missed Connections after spotting each other at a Walgreens in 2005.
