Jean-Georges Vongerichten Is in Talks to Takeover Tribeca Grill After It Closes
Briefly

Tribeca Grill, co-founded by Robert De Niro and Drew Nieporent, is closing on March 1 after a remarkable 35-year history as a neighborhood staple. The restaurant served as a cultural hub and a key player in local events, including the Tribeca Festival. Jean-Georges Vongerichten has expressed interest in taking over the location, though no deal is confirmed. Partners included several celebrities, and Nieporent reflected on the closure, citing economic struggles following the pandemic. Tribeca Grill hosted many notable events, including a visit from Nelson Mandela shortly after he was released from prison.
"Thirty-five years is half my life," Nieporent told Eater in reflecting on the impending closing. He equated the run of Tribeca Grill to Phantom of the Opera, the longest-running show on Broadway.
We've given it our best, but the economics following the Covid pandemic never fully rebounded for us," said partner Marty Shapiro in an official statement.
