David Johansen obituary
Briefly

The New York Dolls, influenced by the UK glam rock wave, faced ridicule upon their 1973 BBC appearance, particularly from host Bob Harris. Singer David Johansen, who joined the band in 1971, may have agreed with the mockery. Their androgynous style was more celebrated in Britain than in the US, gaining them a significant following, including future punk musicians. After drummer Billy Murcia's tragic death, the band returned to New York and signed with Mercury Records, releasing their debut album that showcased a mix of glam rock and poignant ballads.
"The Dolls took their lead not from the adult-oriented rock and earnest singer-songwriters dominating the US album charts, but from the glam rock scene making headway in the UK."
"A young Steve Jones, future guitarist with the Sex Pistols, was in the audience, and would later say the Dolls' shambolic set was a huge inspiration."
