In dark times, SF's Caribbean culture festival presents art as a beacon
Briefly

The 19th annual CubaCaribe Festival, running from March 28 to April 4 in San Francisco, addresses the stark contrasts between Caribbean cultural richness and the pervasive hardships faced by community members. Highlighted are ongoing crises in Cuba, Haiti, and Puerto Rico, marked by economic strife, violence, and infrastructural failures. The festival, themed 'A Fire Within,' serves not only as a celebration of Caribbean arts but also as a poignant reminder of the struggles within these communities. Curator Jamaica Itule emphasizes their commitment to continue supporting artists despite these challenges.
Cuba's chronically underfunded infrastructure has suffered a series of nationwide blackouts over the past year as the energy grid has repeatedly crashed.
In so many ways, we've been dealing with a lot of these issues for many years. It gets worse and it gets better, but it does feel like the worst right now.
The theme of this year's festival is 'A Fire Within,' showcasing an impressive array of artists amid significant socio-political challenges.
We're going to continue to create more opportunities for the artists we work with.
