Two months after an initial rally concerning the potential closure of the United Senior Center of Sunset Park due to soaring rents, concerned community members held a second rally as the lease renewal deadline approaches. The landlord proposed a staggering 86% total rent increase over a decade, which was rejected by the NYC Department of the Aging's increase offer. Local leaders emphasized the vital role the senior center plays in the lives of seniors in the community, who depend on it for meals, activities, and social support.
For over five decades, the United Senior Center has served as a special place where seniors of different backgrounds gather for meals, activities, programs, and support. Our older adults rely on this precious space to stay connected, healthy, and active, and we must protect it from being displaced.
United Senior Center of Sunset Park is incredibly crucial to our community and has been for multiple generations. Displacing them would be a tragic loss for Sunset Park families who rely on their services for the health and wellness of their loved ones.
