Four months post the closure of the Meredith Bus Depot, Staten Island commuters are increasingly frustrated with overcrowded and infrequent express bus services. The closure, which reduced the number of bus depots from four to three, has led to delays of over 30 minutes at some stops. Transit advocates claim that the remaining depots are overwhelmed, hindering timely bus maintenance. Borough President Vito Fossella elaborated on the safety hazards posed by buses obstructing traffic at the Castleton depot, emphasizing the urgent need for a fourth depot to alleviate these pressures and improve public transit.
"The closing of Meredith has put unnecessary stress on the three other depots that do bus repairs and maintenance... When Meredith closed, it offloaded all 75 of its express buses."
"Borough President Vito Fossella explained that the situation is so extreme at Castleton, that long lines of buses waiting for service often overflow into oncoming traffic."
