On April 28, Newark Liberty International Airport experienced a critical 90-second failure of both radar and radio communications, which left air traffic controllers without the ability to manage flights. While no accidents occurred, the event resulted in psychological stress for FAA employees, leading to multiple trauma leaves. The situation, exacerbated by ongoing runway repairs and low staffing levels, caused extensive flight delays and cancellations, with more than 200 delays reported. United Airlines CEO Scott Kirby noted that recent staffing issues worsened operational capabilities at the airport, compelling the airline to reduce flight schedules significantly.
In the constant hustle and bustle of one of the busiest airports in the United States, a terrifying 90 seconds of quiet had disastrous results.
This meant that air traffic controllers could not see, hear, or speak to aircraft or pilots around the airport.
Scott Kirby, CEO of United Airlines, wrote that Newark airport's technology problems were compounded when "over 20% of the FAA controllers for EWR walked off the job."
Due to these difficulties, Kirby added, United would cancel 35 round trips per day from Newark beginning this past weekend.
