Immigration crackdowns have unfolded in broad daylight across the country, but in New York City, most detentions have been quietly concentrated in a single building.
As candidates for mayor debate public safety and police funding, a new report shows that adding more cops has not always translated to lower crime rates throughout the city's history.
Detectives from the 83rd Precinct responded to the incident located at Broadway and Kossuth Place at around 4 p.m. on Aug. 7. Upon arrival, police found the victim suffering from multiple gunshot wounds to the torso.
"Officers from the 79th Precinct were busy trying to save cyclists and bust illegal parkers on the newly unprotected stretch of Bedford Avenue, but had to stop issuing summonses because they ran out of them."
Masked federal agents now routinely patrol the immigration court at 26 Federal Plaza, creating an atmosphere where immigrants fear not the hearings but their outcomes after dismissal.
Witnesses stated that while there was a medical emergency, the proctors hesitated to intervene and refused to stop the exam despite the clear need for assistance.
