The Austin City Council has voted to extend the automated license plate reader program through June 2025 while an analysis by the city auditor is conducted. This program, initiated in March 2024, is aimed at aiding crime investigations, but it has sparked controversy among community members who are concerned about civil liberties. Some officials express worry about the potential misuse of data, especially regarding federal requests, hinting at broader governmental disregard for civil rights. The final decision on its permanence will depend on findings to be reviewed by the Audit and Finance Committee in May.
I do believe the landscape has changed dramatically since the last time (license plate readers) were in front of this body, acknowledging the safeguards that Council put into place.
I'm concerned that continuing (the program) will put our residents at risk.
