Rep. Al Green faced bipartisan censure after his disruptions at President Trump's State of the Union address. Despite facing criticism, including from fellow Democrats, Green expressed a resolve to continue his protests, emphasizing that his actions were guided by his conscience. He questioned the level of civility among Democrats, suggesting that during critical times for American rights, more assertive stances are necessary. Green noted that his outburst was spontaneous, triggered by the President's claims of having a mandate, and he remains committed to peaceful protest, regardless of the consequences.
I believe that we have to move forward with righteous incivility, Green replied in part. This is what we engaged in when we sang We Shall Overcome, and what I engaged in when I stood and indicated that the President didn't have a mandate to cut Medicaid.
My conscience dictated that I do what I did. I am prepared to accept whatever the punishment is. I don't have to agree with it, but I can accept it because that's what peaceful protest demands.
