If you've ever loved your country, this is a time to show it. If you want our leaders to be accountable, if you're devoted to the Constitution and the rule of law, if you want the United States of America to be worthy of your love, be ready to take to the streets together and we will take our country back.

So the polling was bad before the speech and bad after the speech, Seth Meyers reported on Wednesday evening, and on top of that it was long and boring, clocking in at a record one hour and 47 minutes. Or, if you're Republican, it was the best State of the Union speech that I've seen, to quote the House speaker, Mike Johnson.

We can all agree no state can be allowed to rip children from their parents' arms and transition them to a new gender against the parents' will. Among the anti-trans proposals Trump advocated for in his State of the Union address Tuesday night was a nationwide ban on schools acknowledging and supporting trans and gender diverse students' social transitions without notifying their parents.

Before Trump said a single word, Press Watch's Dan Froomkin published a pre-emptive indictment of the press corps. Froomkin predicted journalists would pull out select quotes and proposals and lead with them, as if Trump had been articulate, would repeat his outrageous falsehoods without immediate and thorough rebuttal, and would treat the speech like it was normal.

When I spoke in this chamber 12 months ago, I had just inherited a nation in crisis, with a stagnant economy, inflation at record levels, a wide-open border, horrendous recruitment for military and police, rampant crime at home and wars and chaos all over the world. But tonight, after just one year, I can say with dignity and pride that we have achieved a transformation like no one has ever seen before and a turnaround for the ages.

The president didn't seem very invested in the lies that he was telling about the economy, but he did list a whole bunch of them right off the bat. But as I say, some of the takeaway there, I think, is mostly going to be his pace and his freneticism.

Trump is marching America towards fascism, and I refuse to normalize his shredding of our Constitution & democracy. This cannot be business as usual.
