Newark Liberty International Airport has faced severe disruptions since an air traffic control system crash on April 28. The Philadelphia TRACON facility experienced a complete communication failure with 20 flights, leading to chaos as controllers lost contact with aircraft. The situation worsened with over 20% of FAA controllers absent from the facility, compounded by ongoing runway construction. United Airlines has proactively canceled many flights, suggesting that Newark cannot support its scheduled operations in the coming weeks.
"Unfortunately, the technology issues were compounded as over 20% of the FAA controllers for EWR walked off the job," said United Airlines CEO Scott Kirby in a public letter.
"The silence lasted just seconds, but the aftershocks have stretched on for over a week, adding extra drama to your usual NYC-area airport experience."
