NJ Transit claims union wants higher salaries as possible strike looms
Briefly

A potential NJ Transit train strike looms, with no progress in negotiations between NJ Transit management and the union representing train engineers. NJ Transit President Kris Kolluri criticized the union's salary demands, alleging they have increased significantly beyond the agency's offer. While the agency claims engineers average $135,000 a year and have proposed a raise to $172,000, the union disputes these figures, suggesting the median wage is significantly lower. Union representatives highlight ongoing disputes over salary data, leaving over 350,000 daily riders uncertain of their travel plans.
Kolluri stated, 'I think that the proposal that they have put forward is neither serious nor does it show a signal that they are willing to collaborate to get to a solution.'
Union General Chair Tom Haas countered, saying, 'The median salary for an NJ Transit engineer in 2024 was $105,000...our most recent offer was only 2% higher than what New Jersey Transit had demanded we accept.'
