Progressive organizations, notably The Legal Aid Society, are campaigning against Governor Kathy Hochul's proposals concerning involuntary commitment and discovery reform, leading to a budget impasse in New York. This situation is heightened by political maneuvers and public statements, where Legal Aid commended lawmakers for resisting Hochul's push. Critics argue the governor's actions misuse the budget negotiations, which should prioritize essential fiscal policies amidst potential federal funding losses. Meanwhile, voices like State Senator George Borrello express concerns about Legal Aid's motives, citing a conflict of interest regarding the discovery laws that could strain the state's district attorney resources.
"Rolling back discovery reforms should not, and must not, be the reason New York State's budget does not get passed promptly," a statement from Legal Aid states.
"Governor Hochul's insistence on exploiting the budget process to push through policies...is misguided and delays the critical fiscal policies New Yorkers need," said a representative from Legal Aid.
State Sen. George Borrello argued that Legal Aid has a conflict of interest in its opposition to the discovery laws..."We're going to make the Legal Aid Society's job easier with the discovery law," he lamented.
