The Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) has introduced a new subway map, inspired by previous designs, primarily the Vignelli map from 1972. The new map emphasizes readability with bold, straight lines and vibrant colors against a white background. While evolving from historical designs, it aims to clarify travel directions for commuters. The map replaces a previously used design from 1979, which was based on the geographical layout of New York City, enhancing user experience for subway riders in the upcoming weeks as it becomes available on trains.
The new subway map takes inspiration from previous versions while simplifying essential travel information in a 'readable, bright, bold and orderly manner,' according to the MTA.
Designed by the MTA's Creative Services Mapping Department, the new layout uses bold, straight lines, making it easier for riders to follow directions at a glance.
