Sasha Zabelin, affected by the onset of the Russia-Ukraine war in February 2022, felt helpless initially. However, he discovered a way to support Ukrainian refugees by starting Outbaking, a bakery that specializes in rugelach, a pastry with roots in Eastern European Jewish communities. Partnering with local Ukrainian women who possessed baking skills but lacked opportunities, Zabelin was able to create a business that merges culinary traditions with economic support. The bakery aims to celebrate heritage while providing a means for refugees to earn an income in the Bay Area.
