Michelle Hammer, a designer with schizophrenia, uses her brand Schizophrenic.NYC to challenge stereotypes about mental illness and promote acceptance. Despite initially struggling with psychosis during her adolescence, which included voices that caused isolation and paranoia, Michelle sought help from college health services and began her journey toward stability. Through her clothing line, she aims to facilitate discussions about mental health and demonstrate that individuals with serious mental illnesses can lead fulfilling lives while contributing positively to society.
People most often experience the first signs of schizophrenia in adolescence or young adulthood. For Michelle, psychosis first showed up as a voice bombarding her with intimately personal attacks ordering her to keep to herself.
I heard this voice in my head that led me to isolating myself and not being very outgoing. Every time she was trying to get me help, I thought she was trying to hurt me.
