Hornchurch man died 'after medication caused bowel bleed'
Briefly

Sterling Howard Vann, 71, died at Queen's Hospital, Romford, from a spontaneous gastrointestinal bleed believed to be caused by the anticoagulant clexane, which was prescribed for a pulmonary embolism. Following the referral of his death by the Barking, Havering and Redbridge University Hospitals NHS Trust, Senior Coroner Graeme Irvine opened an inquest. The family's legal status as interested persons allows them to question witnesses and scrutinize evidence, including hospital records and GP documentation. A final inquest is scheduled for April 9 to determine the circumstances surrounding Mr Vann's death and potential future avoidable risks.
Mr Vann, who was in the advanced stages of dementia, had developed a pulmonary embolism. Doctors prescribed him clexane, an anticoagulant, to treat the blood clot. However, it seemingly caused a fatal spontaneous gastrointestinal bleed, which was the primary cause of his death.
The coroner declared Mr Vann's family interested persons, entitling them to scrutinise evidence before the final inquest and question any witnesses called to testify.
