"While the MTA is willing to use commuters to play a game of chicken with our unions, days before Long Island is to host an international event, we will continue being the adults in the room, and we were, we refused to let New York State and the MTA embarrass our region on the world stage."
"send an unmistakable message that our membership [is] unified, committed, and prepared to take all lawful actions necessary to secure a fair and reasonable contract."
"This is not greedy. The MTA can afford it, and now it's time for"
Five unions representing roughly half of the Long Island Rail Road workforce authorized a strike after talks with the MTA broke down, then requested a presidentially convened emergency board to delay any work stoppage. The emergency board request triggers an eight-month negotiating process that prevents a strike while talks continue. Union leaders said they sought to avoid disrupting commutes, especially with the Ryder Cup approaching, and noted workers have been without a contract since 2022. The unions seek raises of 3% in year one, 3% in year two, 3.5% in year three, and 6.5% in the final year.
