Manhattan's New Museum will reopen this autumn following $82m expansion
Briefly

The New Museum in Manhattan’s Lower East Side will reopen this autumn after being closed since March 2024 for an $82 million expansion. The new seven-storey building, designed by OMA and Cooper Robertson, will double gallery space and improve visitor flow with new elevators and an atrium staircase. The expansion is part of a $125 million capital campaign, with $118 million raised. The new building will be dedicated to late trustee Toby Devan Lewis and aims to enhance community engagement and creativity through its design and added spaces.
"Imagined as a highly connected yet distinct counterpart to the existing museum's verticality and solidity, the new building will offer horizontally expansive galleries for curatorial variety, open vertical circulation and a diversity of spaces for gathering, exchange and creation," Shigematsu said in a statement.
"The expansion project will also improve visitor flow with the addition of three new elevators and an atrium staircase."
"The new seven-storey building... will double the institution's galleries, improve visitor circulation and add education, artist studio and event spaces."
"Part of a $125m capital campaign, of which $118m has been raised to date, includes $30m donated by the museum's late trustee Toby Devan Lewis, the largest gift in the institution's 48-year-history."
