Meet Mike Flynn, Mayor Mamdani's newly minted Transportation Department head amNewYork
"It is an honor to have Mike here alongside me as we embark on an administration that will take seriously the responsibility and the opportunity we have to make this streetscape and the public transit of the city we call home, Mamdani said during the Jan. 1 ceremony. It will require someone who's experienced, who is fluent in the landscape as it is, and who is ambitious and imaginative towards the landscape as it could be and I can think of no better person than the man alongside me, he added, referring to Flynn."
"During the ceremony, Flynn who spent nine years at DOT under former Mayors Michael Bloomberg and Bill de Blasio said he is thrilled to be joining the administration because Mamdani and his team fundamentally understands the role that transportation plays in the day-to-day lives of New Yorkers. Flynn worked at DOT for nearly 10 years, ultimately serving as the agency's director of capital planning and project management until 2014."
"DOT oversees New York City's streetscape. The agency's purview includes paving city roads, managing traffic patterns, adding road safety features, and installing bus and bike lanes across the city."
Zohran Mamdani appointed Mike Flynn as New York City Department of Transportation commissioner moments after being sworn in during a midnight ceremony in the decommissioned City Hall train station. Flynn is a transportation veteran who worked at DOT for nearly ten years, ultimately serving as director of capital planning and project management until 2014 and overseeing major capital projects. DOT manages the city's streetscape, including paving, traffic patterns, road safety features, and installation of bus and bike lanes. Delivering fast, free city buses is a central campaign promise and DOT leadership will be key to implementation.
