Gottheimer emphasized the bipartisan need to combat the congestion tax, stating, 'It's insane. I will work with any Democrat or Republican to fight this congestion tax.' He pointed out that New Jersey has no influence over the tolls regulated by New York’s authority.
He articulated the impact of the tolls on those who must drive to work, noting that many overnight shift workers, like nurses, lack public transit options late at night, saying, 'Some people have to drive. They have no choice.'
Gottheimer expressed concern over the growing divide between New York and New Jersey officials due to the congestion pricing, highlighting the historical cooperation in overseeing the Port Authority's operations.
