A corrections officer suffered serious injuries after intervening in an inmate attack, highlighting the ongoing risks and violence present within Rikers Island.

The incident on Oct. 16 again raised concerns about security measures at Rikers Island, where assaults on officers have become increasingly frequent since Brereton's appointment.
