The great derail: Hochul, LIRR unions trade rage over rail strike shutdown ahead of Monday commute
"All we're asking for is a cost-of-living increase, no more. That's it, to keep up with the cost of living. I mean, we have free money to give to everybody across this entire state, but you have no money for the people to actually go out and work, and my paycheck that you tax in order to get that money to give to those people."
Gov. Kathy Hochul said agreeing to the striking Long Island Rail Road workers’ demands would cause ticket prices to rise as much as 8% and could increase taxes for Long Islanders. She argued she has worked to reduce costs and would not allow those gains to be undone, framing the strike as a threat to affordability for commuters. Hochul said residents deserve fare relief and that the dispute should not lead to higher prices and less money for households. Union members picketed at Penn Station, chanting against service disruptions. A union member criticized Hochul’s remarks, saying the state has money for other purposes but not for workers’ salaries, and said the request is a cost-of-living increase.
