In an incident that sparked outrage, an NYPD officer was filmed taking a jump shot in the yard of a burning three-story home in Brooklyn while firefighters worked to control the blaze. The shocking video, shared on social media, showed the officer obliviously shooting hoops as a person inside was critically injured. Critics, including fellow officers and onlookers, condemned the behavior as irresponsible and disrespectful to the firefighters risking their lives. The NYPD has acknowledged the video and is conducting an internal review regarding the officer's actions during the emergency.
"His behavior was reprehensible during such a calamity," said one longtime police officer who spoke on the condition of anonymity. "Firemen risked their lives, and he thought it was a good idea during such a tragedy to shoot hoops?"
"Playing hoops while the house is on fire is diabolical," said Anthony P.
"Exactly what that house was missing, a brick," wrote Flow Joe.
Firefighters "did an incredible job as they worked against a heavy wind condition and a partial collapse of one of the fire buildings," according to a post by FDNY Commissioner Robert Tucker.
