Bloom or bust? Superbloom spectacle eludes California after dry winter
Briefly

California's famed superblooms, known for their stunning floral displays, are experiencing a disappointing season in 2023 due to a dry winter. The Antelope Valley California Poppy Reserve, usually a vibrant hotspot, has seen remarkably few blooms, with park ranger Callista Turner noting that rainfall has been insufficient. Normally, 6 inches of rain are needed to trigger significant blooming, but this year’s rainfall barely reached an inch. Factors like storm intensity and temperature also influence bloom quality, further complicating this year's superbloom potential.
The blooms are massive enough to draw tourists from around the world, but this year the hills around southern California superbloom hotspots have been conspicuously bare.
With less than an inch of rain this winter, conditions have not been favorable for the superbloom, contrasting sharply with years when the blooms were extraordinary.
