January wasn't expected to break global temperature records. But it did.
Briefly

January 2025 has been declared the hottest January recorded globally, surpassing previous temperatures. This alarming trend follows record-breaking heat in 2023 and 2024, with NOAA reporting temperatures around 1.5 Celsius above pre-industrial levels. Despite a transition to the cooler La Nina phase, temperatures continued to rise, with January recorded at 1.75 Celsius above historic norms. This persistent warming trends indicate a possibility of more extreme weather behaviors as climate scientists express surprise and concern over Earth’s changing climate patterns.
"There's a pretty dramatic jump in temperature that started in mid-2023, and it has really persisted through the present," says Zeke Hausfather.
"A hot January doesn't mean the rest of the year will necessarily keep on breaking records, but it does increase the odds that 2025 could continue the extraordinary pattern from the past few years."
