"Why would they suddenly want to develop fast flight? The answer seems to be the air," says Edmund Jarzembowski, highlighting the evolutionary adaptations of Palaeontinidae in response to environmental changes.
"Danger is a great motivator. When the research team looked at the bug's fossils, they developed an understanding about the aerial dynamics these giant cicadas were capable of," explains the team’s insights into Palaeontinidae's evolutionary necessity for speed.
"I think they were trying to stay alive," remarks Jarzembowski, referring to the evolutionary pressures that likely influenced Palaeontinidae's need for increased flight speed and agility.
