John Colter’s discovery of Yellowstone in 1807 drew attention to America’s unique natural wonders, leading to significant conservation efforts, including the establishment of the National Park Service in 1916.
‘National parks are the best idea we ever had. Absolutely American, absolutely democratic, they reflect us at our best rather than our worst,’ said Wallace Stegner, highlighting their cultural significance.
While national parks celebrate natural beauty, they also reflect the complex history of Indigenous peoples and their displacement, an aspect increasingly acknowledged within park narratives.
With over 300 million visitors to 63 national parks each year, these landscapes are preserved not only for their environmental value but also for their historical significance.
