A great horned owl was found stuck in a glue trap, leading to significant feather loss after a Good Samaritan attempted to help by cutting its feathers. This action hindered the bird's rehabilitation, as it would now take longer to regrow its feathers due to the annual molting cycle of owls. Staff at the Wetlands and Wildlife Care Center used oil and solvents to remove the glue and began rehabilitating the bird. Depending on its recovery, the owl may return to nature or become an educational ambassador concerning glue traps.
"The person was thinking they were doing the right thing by cutting most of the feathers to get the owl unstuck from the trap, but that seriously set back the bird's rehabilitation because now it has to go through a complete molt to be able to grow those feathers back."
"In a best-case scenario, the injured bird will regrow enough feathers to fly and return to the wild within a year. But there is a chance it could take longer to heal..."
