Lucian Freud, known for his privacy, reluctantly participated in the development of a catalogue raisonné of his works during his lifetime. Although he preferred to look forward rather than reflect on his past, he eventually granted approval for the project posthumously. Fourteen years after his death, the catalogue, co-authored by Catherine Lampert and Toby Treves, was finally published. This comprehensive four-volume work includes over 1,200 pages and features essays that delve into Freud’s materials and artistic influences, such as his passion for sculpture and key moments from his past.
"I don't want to look behind, I want to look ahead," Freud expressed to art historian Catherine Lampert when discussing the catalogue raisonné project.
The catalogue raisonné of Freud's oil paintings has been published 14 years after his death, co-authored by Catherine Lampert and Toby Treves.
Lucian Freud: Catalogue Raisonné of the Oil Paintings is a four-volume work covering over a thousand pages, showcasing 507 paintings.
The first volume includes thematic essays, covering Freud's materials, a photograph analysis, and exploring his long-standing passion for sculpture.
