Strike Averted: City Reaches Tentative Deal with Largest Employee Union
Briefly

The Oregon AFSCME Local 189 labor union announced a tentative agreement with the city of Portland after long negotiations, avoiding a potential strike. Representing 1,100 city employees, AFSCME had faced stalled negotiations concerning salary increases. They demand a $27 minimum wage and a 2% raise, while the city's proposals included a lower 1%. This agreement aims to acknowledge the city workers’ contributions while further negotiations continue with other unions facing similar issues. Union representatives stress the need for fair compensation to uphold the values of the city and its employees.
"No Portland worker should be paid less than a living wage," Dave Crepeau stated. "We're fighting to ensure the city honors its values, valuing those workers who keep Portland running."
AFSCME is requesting an $27 hourly minimum wage, a COLA, and a 2 percent wage increase, countered by the city with a 1 percent raise and a COLA.
