Tommy Shin, well-known for his ramen restaurants in Portland, is launching a new Korean eatery called Moon Pocha on March 11, collaborating with chef Sun Moon. Aiming for a casual late-night dining atmosphere, Shin's restaurant will feature a menu akin to 'Korean tapas', with shareable plates priced between $9 and $25. Inspired by the Korean street pubs (pojangmacha), Moon Pocha offers dishes like spicy tteokbokki and Korean fried chicken, alongside unique soju-based drinks called dae-pos. Shin's vision aims to create a relaxed, social dining experience reminiscent of traditional Korean eateries.
Pocha in Korea, it's like, 'let's meet up,' or, 'let's grab a meal,' Shin says. Then usually [groups] go to pocha, and it's very casual; they go there to celebrate good news, or talk through problems with friends, or just hang out.
For relatable terms, Shin likens Moon Pocha's menu to 'Korean tapas,' indicating that dishes will be smaller, snacky bites to compose a meal.
Pricing for the menu will typically be between $9 and $25, with items such as spicy tteokbokki, kimchi pancakes, plus drinking favorite corn cheese.
There's a lot of great Korean barbecue and homestyle restaurants around, but pocha focuses on small plates, late-night drinking, and social dining.
