Onsen, the renowned Japanese-style bathhouse in San Francisco, has reopened after a five-year hiatus, featuring its unique old-growth redwood interiors and management by Adam Wren, the former spa manager. Meanwhile, Menlo Park's Asaya Spa at the Rosewood Sand Hill has undergone a revival. With a new design by Nicolehollis, it incorporates natural elements and modern wellness practices, including innovative treatments using an anti-inflammatory skincare line from Dr. Barbara Sturm and a focus on integrating traditional methods with high-tech approaches. This reflects a shift in the spa experience towards fusion of contemporary and nature-oriented wellness.
"I think this place is extremely special and so unique in terms of the design," says Wren. Even the materials used to build it—old-growth redwood that's difficult to get ahold of today—are one of a kind.
"Everything from the colors to the walls is different," says spa director Ania Mankowska. They went with a palette of green and earth tones to bring the outdoors inside.
