Academy with 35,000 pupils to ban smartphones over feared link to poor mental health
Briefly

Tom Rees, the chain's chief executive, stated, 'Current rules in the majority of schools which enable students to have their phones with them fail to tackle the harm phones are having on pupils' education and mental health.' He emphasized the urgency of addressing these issues, citing a clear correlation between phone usage and rising mental health problems among students.
Mr. Rees noted, 'We are seeing huge and real concerns around mental health, post-pandemic… These are not just self-reported, we're also seeing real concerns about self-harm, attempted suicide, A&E admissions involving young people and adolescents.' This highlights the alarming trends that inform the academy's decision.
The Ormiston academies, which runs 44 state schools, plans to take away smartphones during the school day for 35,000 students. This is a groundbreaking measure aimed at improving educational outcomes and mental health.
