This settlement is part of the final chapter in a lawsuit filed by the DCWP against R. G. Ortiz Funeral Homes for multiple offenses, including refusal to provide information on remains and misrepresentation of prices.
In total, 28 consumers will receive approximately $104,000 in payments, with an additional $500,000 set aside for others who have yet to file claims concerning the exploitative practices of the funeral home.
DCWP Commissioner Vilda Vera Mayuga stated that while financial compensation cannot heal the wounds caused by R.G. Ortiz's actions, the department is proud to hold the business accountable.
The Department of Consumer and Worker Protection imposed a total of $604,000 from Ortiz Funeral Homes to help affected consumers, along with a civil penalty of $100,000 paid to the city.
