Trump's short reprieve for TikTok: Social media platform gets 75 more days to find US buyer
Briefly

President Donald Trump signed an executive order to extend TikTok's U.S. operations for an additional 75 days, allowing his administration more time to negotiate an ownership deal. Despite Congressional mandates to divest from Chinese ownership by mid-January, Trump aims to broker an agreement with interested U.S. businesses while ByteDance asserts it is not selling the platform. The delays raise ongoing national security concerns, despite TikTok's claimed user safety measures and assurances from China's government against data sharing requests.
My Administration has been working very hard on a Deal to SAVE TIKTOK, and we have made tremendous progress. The Deal requires more work to ensure all necessary approvals are signed.
Trump's delay of the ban marks the second time that he has temporarily blocked the 2024 law that banned the popular social video app after the deadline passed for ByteDance to divest.
TikTok prioritizes user safety, and China's Foreign Ministry has stated that the government has never asked companies to provide data or intelligence held abroad.
The ban was deemed necessary for national security by Congress and upheld unanimously by the Supreme Court.
