Netflix users are being warned of a recent email phishing scam claiming to hold accounts until payment details are updated. The email appears highly authentic, resembling legitimate Netflix correspondence with subject lines like 'Let's tackle your payment details.' It encourages users to click a link leading to a fake login page to steal personal information. Cybersecurity experts highlight the increasing sophistication of such scams, aided by AI technology, which allows cybercriminals to target many users quickly, creating a false urgency to act without verification.
The email scam has been circulating for several weeks now, and includes the subject line 'Let's tackle your payment details.' Once opened, the email looks near identical to legitimate emails sent to customers by Netflix. 'Your account is on hold. Please update your payment details,' it reads.
'Although phishing emails have been around since the birth of the email address, AI technology has now enabled criminal gangs to generate phishing campaigns at speed and to more email addresses than ever,' said Jake Moore, Global Cybersecurity Advisor at ESET.
