The proposed new rules from the U.S. Department of Commerce could effectively ban Chinese automakers in the U.S. by prohibiting the sale of connected vehicles.
Commerce Department officials emphasized that cars with connected features linked to China present national security risks, which could compromise sensitive data or allow remote manipulation.
Once finalized, the rules on software would come into effect for model year 2027, while hardware prohibitions would start for model year 2030 or early 2029.
As officials noted, the aim is to protect against malicious access that could enable adversaries to collect data or control vehicles on the roads.
