Research indicates that one-third of women who died during or shortly after pregnancy were known to children's social care services, with suicide accounting for 20% of these deaths. In total, from 2014 to 2022, 1,451 women died, with 420 having prior contact with social care. Many of these women experienced domestic abuse and came from backgrounds of trauma. A lack of coordinated care from maternity, mental health, and social services contributed to their struggles during pregnancy, leading to disjointed support and appointment schedules.
