In the episode titled "Monster," the series Sirens leans into its comedic elements while addressing heavier themes, exemplified by character dynamics between Simone and Devon. The episode opens with a nightmare that reflects Simone's stress, leading to conflicts that surface unresolved family issues. The narrative embraces a blend of humor and serious revelations, allowing the show to explore emotional depths without becoming overly grim. The use of humor amid intense moments is appreciated, as it creates a more engaging viewing experience, ultimately reflecting the show's unique tone.
I said to myself as the end credits rolled. But y'know what? Great! For all the very real shit Sirens brings up - and this episode features some very intense revelations - it still feels like a book I could rip through in a single sunny afternoon after a wholesome round of quahogging.
Even if the tonal shifts don't always work, I'd rather watch a show embrace funny weirdness than wallow in self-serious drama the whole time.
Devon says. "No, you're giving me panic attacks," Simone retorts. Cue another fight about everything and nothing, as is the sisterly way.
Then, wanting to win their latest round of "who has it worse," Devon plays a risky - not to mention manipulative - hand. "I got my second DUI," she reveals.
