For the first time in over fifty years, Syrians are experiencing Ramadan without the oppressive rule of the Assad family. After the overthrow of Bashar al-Assad by the Hayat Tahrir al-Sham group, the observance of Ramadan has shifted to traditional practices, including closures of restaurants during fasting hours. Another resident hailed the measure noting that it brings back the original feeling of Ramadan.
There are concerns however that the Syria, under Ahmed al-Sharaa's leadership, could turn the country into an Islamic state.
